Sicilian Wine. Meridio Estate, ARUNDO wine (100% Alicante) Old Relationship between Sicily & Spain

In this video we talk about a wine form Sicily and we tallk about this wine from Piemonte, from Roero where i live. This is very difficult period to move as we are in lockdown here in Italy.

This wine is called ARUNDO and is a wine made by 100% Alicante grape. Is a wine from MERIODIO Estate located in Chiaramonte Gulfi in the South East of Sicily in Ragusa province.

This Estate is only 1 Hectare property, 3 owners, one Winemaker and 2 Geologists.
They are completely and truòy natural in making wines, organic in the vineyard and the have in this 1 Hectare of vineyard the following grapes:
– Alicante
– Frappato
– Nero d’Avola

This wine is made wih fermentation in tank then 16 months in neutral 500 lt cask.

Very pleasant, fresh, rich wine when is young but then become very complex and really intriguing wine.
It is anywaw a HAPPY WINE!!!

the soil there is mainly made by calcareous rock, limestone on a marln subsoil.
So you have alwasy a line of acidity, minerality and drincability.

This is a unique wine but the history of Alicante in Italy goes back in the past. Brought by Spanish during their Empire in 15th, 16th Century. Thsi grape was also spread around other regions in Italy, like Sardegna, Molise, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Calabria and others. BUt in Sicily found a very natural enviroment to grow properly giving extraordinary products.
Then the locals at a certain point substituted thsi grape with the much easier Nero d’Avola. So at today very few producres make 100% Alicante in Sicily.

Alicante is also known with different name, like Cannonau, Tocai Rosso and other names and in Freance for example like Granache and Alicante as well.

If you can find this wine try becasue is really worth it.
