This homemade tomato sauce is easy to put together and smells delicious while cooking. Serve it over spaghetti and meatballs for the perfect Italian dinner.
Italian Tomato Sauce
Serves: 4
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup yellow onion, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1⁄2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon salt
1⁄2 teaspoon pepper
1 can (28 oz.) crushed tomatoes
1⁄2 cup water
1⁄4 cup tomato paste
Directions
Step 1
In large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add oil. Once hot, add onion, bell pepper, garlic, basil, oregano, thyme, salt and pepper. Cook about 10 minutes, until onion is very tender.
Step 2
Add tomatoes, water and tomato paste. Bring to boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, partially covered, about 30 minutes.
Step 3
Serve and refrigerate leftovers.
