Our list of top 5 Best food in Buffalo New York starts with our delicious #5 spot…
5. Ted’s Hot Dogs. Ted’s Hot Dogs is a charcoal broiled, Sahlen brand hot dog. Ted’s makes our list for the hot dog but also the unusual drink that I have only ever seen in Buffalo….Loganberry Drink. This crazy sugary drink is a bit much for me, but the kids loved it.
4. Charlie the Butcher’s famous Beef on Weck. Beef on Weck is a sandwich found primarily in Western New York, particularly the city of Buffalo. It is made with carved roast beef on a kummelweck roll. A kummelweck roll is a roll topped with kosher salt and caraway seeds.
3. Sponge Candy. Sponge Candy is a sugary toffee with a sponge-like melt away texture. It is typically made with brown sugar and corn syrup and then coated in milk chocolate. Sponge Candy can also go by the names Honeycomb Toffee, Sponge Toffee, Cinder Toffee, Fairy Candy, or Hokey Pokey.
2. Spaghetti Parmesan at Chef’s Italian Restaurant. Buffalonians love their Spaghetti parm and now so do we. The buttery pasta dish is smothered in cheese and should not be missed when visiting. The Classic Buffalo dish, I haven’t found anywhere else.
And before we get to our number one spot, here are some honorable mentions. Buffalo-style pizza has a thin crust that is softer than a classic NYC crust. Buffalo style pizza also has a sweet tomato sauce, loaded with cheese and topped with a thick pepperoni that crisps and turns up at the ends.
Paula’s Donuts. Paula’s is the place to get donuts in Western NY. Paula’s is famous for their peanut sticks. Peaunut sticks are long fry cakes that are rolled in chopped peanuts.
1. Buffalo Wings!!!! Could the number one go to anything else? Buffalo wings were invented in BUFFALO! and to be more exact, Buffalo Wings were invented at the Anchor Bar. The story goes, Dominic Bellissimo asked his mother Teressa Bellissimo to prepare something for him and his friends to eat, while working at the Anchor Bar. Teressa took some chicken wings that were headed for the stock pot and deep fried them, tossed them in a spicy sauce and served them with blue cheese. The rest is history.
