Master of Wine: Two RED WINE Values for Around $10

In this video, Bob Paulinski Master of Wine focuses on two red wine values, one from Portugal, the other from Italy. Both wines were purchased at Costco, but are also sold through other retailers, along with an international presence.

WINE 1:
2019 Quinta do Portal Mural Reserva from the Douro Valley of Portugal. The wine typically sells for $12.99 at Costco, but they are running a promotion into late September at $8.99. The wine is made from 40% Touriga Franca, 40% Tinta Roriz and 20% Touriga Nacional.

RECOMMENDED, A VERY GOOD VALUE, ESPECIALLY AT THE PROMOTED PRICE.

Tasting note:
Good color depth, dense core, a bit of fade at the edge of the glass. Showing a reduced character that blows off with a few minutes of vigorous aeration. With Air, it shows a dark fruit character, good ripeness and extended length on the palate. A wine to drink over the next year or two.

WINE 2:
2019 Villa Pani Barbera d’Asti Superiore from Piedmonte, Italy at $9.99.

RECOMMENDED, A SOUND VALUE.

Tasting note: Medium deep color, vibrant red color, some fade at the edge of the glass. Bright, lifted, red fruit aroma, medium-bodied, minimal overt oak influence, good palate presence, medium length, good level of acidity with minimal tannins, with a dry finish. A wine to drink over the next year.

  1. Hi Paul, couple months ago bought a bottle of Mural from Costco since price is good. Open it right away, very drinkable for the first glass and left it in the refrigerator for couple day. It was getting better. Enjoy your channel very much!! Thanks!!

  2. Bob, you need to up that wine budget a bit!?! Love these Costco & TJ options, but also like to see some high quality selections as well. I’m having a poggio bestiale from Fattoria di Magliano with dinner tonight. CHF24 here at Coop in Switzerland! Be well & stay thirsty! Cheers…

  3. Two places I also like to go for value. I’ve received the recommendation to stay with Asti for barberas, since the best land is Alba is dedicated to Nebbiolo. I find the Asti’s are much more available anyway.

  4. Paul, very much appreciate your Costco reviews. I am exploring the wines of Italy and it's always great to throw a few Italian bottles in the Costco cart *IF* they are good representations of the style. This is where your experience and palate are most helpful. Appreciate your insights.

It would also be useful if you could suggest a readily available mid-priced and premium wine in the style your are discussing, in this case Barbera d'Asti. Attractively priced Costco wines are a good way to "try before you buy" so it would be great to know where we should go next on our style exploration. Thanks again for the helpful video.

  5. I brought a couple bottles of your recommendation from Trader Joe's to a party and they were a huge hit. I credited you of course.

  6. I've had little exposure to reduction. For a time, I thought brett might actually be reduction, then I found a dead brett wine and I learned the hard way. Still, I don't often find wines that smell unpleasant and then it goes away. Maybe because warm climate Spanish wine tends toward oxidation? Not sure. But just to be sure: reduction isn't really like brett, is it?

  7. Thanks. Some pretty good price to quality ratios. Big fan of Barbera. This one didn’t seem to have that rustic note I typically find in Piemonte. As for in my glass….. white bordeaux tonight. Cheers and travel safe!

  8. Lodi Costco is my shop. It is the smallest Costco in this area. Perhaps Folsom or Cal Expo would better venues for these wines.

  9. Another awesome video thank you Bob! Hitting costco tomorrow and going to pick up some of this Barbera and Kirkland 2020 Barolo

  10. Bought the Barbera two weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Going to grab the Mural on the next visit. Thanks for the heads up!

  11. Thanks for another insightful, well put together (fun camera work) video. I always appreciate your reviews of affordable/findable (Costco, TJ, Aldi, grocery store) wines. This is well timed for me. Later I'm heading out to Costco hoping to find the Kirkland Signature Barolo. I think I'll be keeping an eye out for the Quinta do Portal Mural Reserva. Keep up the great work, thanks.

  12. Kroger rue de perle 2022 bordeaux 13.5 strongly exhibits the stoney soils of the right bank fabulous and will get better with a few more years
