The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 – 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 – 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 – 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 – 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 – 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.

The discount chain Aldi is one of the biggest wine retailers in the world. But the wines, that can be found on those shelves don’t … how can I put this … they don’t represent the best of the best.
But they have improved their selection over the last decades and it is the place where people might pick up their first bottle before getting interested in wine.
The thing that wine nerds sometimes forget is that most people are not able to or just don’t want to spend a lot of money on food and or wine.

  1. For me Aldi wine section is an interesting place to visit…I once got Pommery Brut for 22euros and I recently got 2021 Lucente Luce (entry level super tuscan) for 12euro per bottle which normally retails for 32euros…dont know about Aldi wines but one can get good deals.

  2. If you want to try bag in boxes, come to Sweden! There is a monopoly here when it comes to selling alcohol, called Systembolaget. In my little town there is one shop with 914 different wines. 137 of these are bag in box wine! And they are the top selling wines! There are also 66 plastic bottles and 51 paper containers and 28 cans. So only 632 wines in bottles, the rest in less interesting packages.

  3. Konsantin, most people drink wine like this. That's the sad world of wine unfortunately. Not a single one of my work colleagues would ever contemplate spending more than £15, maximum, on a bottle of wine. People that watch your channel are a rare breed of enthusiasts.

  4. Some wines at Aldi are present for just a very short time. They often have wines from the austrian producer Hillinger, in varying grapes. The Grüner Veltliner was not converting me into a fan of Veltliner, but it was enjoyable. The Blauburgunder has always been a profound example of this grape. For ca 3 weeks last month they had a sicilian Zibibbo, which also was not like an earthquake, but it was an unexpected experience regarding the overall spectrum of aldi wines aromas.
But of course, i take these wines occasionally on my shopping tour for the weekend. If i want to buy wine, i have other resources.

  5. Oak chips are cheap. It's probably how they gave the vanilla flavor to that cheap Sicilian blend. Are there any other ways of adding some vanillin to a wine?

  6. When you were describing the Lambrusco I had a nasty flashback to a really bad hangover in my college years. Even the taste was there. 😩 Shame on you.

  7. Great to see you seriously reviewing these cheaper wines seriously, without completely roasting people on a budget! Even if I now drink mostly more expensive wines, there are still those occasions where I want a decent 5-10 euro bottle, such as when hosting a large party. I agree with one of the other commenters: it would be really interesting to see a test of some more expensive bag-in-box wines. It seems to me that packaging form is basically having the same issue as the screw cap once faced, just magnified. I guess it depends on where you are though. From my time here I know that French supermarkets often sell pretty decent wines in that packaging, but it is still quite rare here in the Netherlands.

  8. I feel that tetrapak wine is perfect for cooking. It's got the base notes you want from wine in cooking and frankly, a good wine is better used for drinking than cooking.

  9. Thank you again for the fun video! I'd love it if you could do a video about Tuscany's Sangiovese wines. I know you've already covered Vino Nobiles and Super Tuscans, but I’d like to see more on Classicos and Brunellos as well!

  10. You should do a wine pairing video to determine which wine actually does pair best with rice.

  11. I really appreciate that you do these episodes that are aimed at consumers that can't afford to spend $30+ per bottle. There are a lot of people who want to have wine and need the <$10 selection. Good for you! I completely understand that none of this would appeal to your pallet but you have to remember that the bulk of the population makes little money and can't spend as you do. I'd like to see you do a $10 a bottle review to give the people who can't spend more, have an idea of what they can get that is better.

  12. A video idea for you Konstantin: A blind tasting in a plane ! There are so many premium wines being served in planes these days, but with taste being so greatly affected up there , is it really worth it?

  13. Guess it's the Aldi South assortment as the Aldi North ist mostly completely different.

  14. If I understood correctly, the Australian red has 0.3 g / 100ml of residual sugar. This equals 3 g / l and that should indeed be noticeable in its taste. Not overly sweet, but noticeable.

  15. 19:55 – about adding international wines into local autochthon varieties – I had a nice talk with winery owner on Zakynthos island. His first wine of the winery was a mix of local variety Augostiatis and 20% of CabSauvignon. He told that this a trend indeed to add that international wines to local, but it was in 2000s and now it should not be like this typically.
But as I see in your video that there are still some wineries who are in there.

  16. Agree the 1.5 litre Tetrapak white would kill a romantic dinner and serve its purpose if you want to get drunk. However, you haven’t thought of another context which I have to address all the time which is providing drinks in the interval for a concert if you’re an arts organisation with no money. I think the Committee would pat me on the back if I bought this for them!

  17. Aldi does a decent 'specially selected' Lebanese wine worth a go – it is usually available in the Autumn range. Bekaa Valley, usual mix of Bx and Rhone varieties.

  18. Great video! Regarding your question: not buying vine at Aldi because alcohol is not healthy therefore if I put my health at risk, I only do it for good stuff 😂

  19. Similar boring results to the other Aldi video you published a year ago😜 We got the message. Aim for 6.99 or higher 😅

  20. This is just fermented grapejuice… Thanks for making your afternoon a kind of sweet-sour, so we know wich bottles we need to avoid. You had a lot to endure. My commiserations !

  21. Completely off-topic: the text on your spittoon led down quite the rabbit hole! I know German, but not Allemanic, and so couldn't figure out the meaning at first. Does the Weinkrug come from Freiburg? All the search engine hits with the phrase "sürpfle muesch, nit suffe" are related to Freiburg for some reason.

  22. I made my daughter a diluted fruit juice in her sippy cup and when I left the room Luca Maroni gave it 94 points
