The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmontagu

A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.

Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the “American Heiress” collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.

Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a “dollar bride” during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.

The exhibition will explore Alberta’s formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.

The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we’ve resurrected Alberta’s voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

  1. I love everything about this kitchen! Outstanding job, everyone! I love the idea of colorful cushions. I also like the idea of terra cotta. I think I like the cushion idea better.

    Congratulations! 🎉

  2. THE KITCHEN IS PERFECT ALSO HOW YOU MOVED THE FORMAGIERO TO THAT OTHER WALL IF YOU DO GET MARBLE PLACE THE GLASS ONTOP OF IT TO PROTECT THE MARBLE FROM STAINS.

  3. Julie, you are soo europaean!
One can see your great taste and love to best craftmenship.
Best are the floor and the wall!
    You really understood how to
    furnish your italian house.
    Very homy now!
I do have the same beautiful green you've choosen, at home
A kind of "verde salvia", I think.

I would have left the oven black as it was – as only piece, so very near to the white marble…(My taste only.)
And underneath this very good painting above the sofa, the pattern of the cushions are a bit too bloomy.
And yes, leave the chairs wooden.
Oh, my gosh! Those followers…Excuse me.
    Enjoy your italian retreat! 😊

  4. Leave the chairs as they are. Cushions might make your thighs hit the apron of the table. Beautiful kitchen!

  5. Can’t sleep so watching at 2am and never wanted pasta more 🤤 Don’t paint the chairs… they look lovely and are nearly the terracotta colour anyway.

  6. You have so many painted surfaces in the kitchen including the table base I would leave them in the wood with a blue cushion.

  7. La tua cucina `e meravigliosa, complimenti Julia🎉 Per le sedie, i cuscini di seduta sarebbero perfetti con lo stesso tessuto della tenda sotto il lavandino.😊

  8. Love the chairs brown. Like the idea of cushions. Maybe use fabric from your sink skirt and alternate with the teal from the couch. I just love the sofa in the kitchen. Brilliant.

  9. 🍃🌳. Wonderful job, Julie, on your kitchen! I personally would paint your chairs off white like your walls, and do cushions in green and white..to keep it light and bright. But no matter what you choose to do it will look absolutely charming. Enjoy!🍃

  10. Julie, I’m watching this. I’m getting really excited watching your beautiful little villa turn into a charming place to visit. I’d like to reach out to you, Julie because I do have a project where I will be attempting to renovate an Italian villa in northern Italy all the way from Australia. I know… I hear you say …I don’t know how you’re going to do it but I have a bit of a concept behind it too. Do you have an email that I can forward you details? Because I reckon you’d be pretty touched by what I’d like to do? Just more for your information than anything else. and also very like-minded to what I’d like to do love to you and keep up the good work Tracey from Australia

  12. Hi! Julie lovely kitchen! Perfecto! Beautiful! Keeping the natural look of all wood pieces would be my suggestion. Cushion pads for the dining chairs for the pop of color and you could change them every so often and for the seasons. enJOY!! Your kitchen/Italian home. Aloha from Hawaii 🌺❤
