One suggestion: Instead of cutting off more rounded ends of the lady fingers and adding to the ends of those already there, cut the lady fingers for the main part in half and line up with each edge of the cake, leaving a gap in the middle. Then simply cut lady finger segments to neatly fill in the gap. Can even be done for the narrow end piece.
