American Chop Suey made in the Ninja Foodi

American chop suey is an American pasta dish and a real “classic” in the New England area of the United States with flavors which are influenced by the Italian-American cuisine of the region. It’s known as “American chop suey” because it is a quick mix of meat, vegetables and Italian seasonings thrown together into one pot having some resemblance to other popular pasta dishes like American goulash and chili mac. Although it may sound like this dish is based in Chinese cuisine, it has only a very distant relation to the chop suey of the Chinese, probably due to the way it is prepared and not in the actual ingredients.

The typical American chop suey consists of elbow macaroni and bits of cooked ground beef with sautéed onions in a tomato-based sauce.
This recipe is quite adaptable to your own taste using any of your local ingredients. Although elbow macaroni is the standard, it can be substituted with any other small shaped pastas such as ziti, shells, rotelle or tube type pastas. Whole, diced, or crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste are typical sauce bases for this dish. Many of the spices and herbs used can be found in many Italian recipes. Sometimes grated Parmesan cheese, Black pepper, herbs such as Basil, Mint, Oregano and Worcestershire sauce may also be used in its preparation. American chop suey is served on a plate or in a bowl accompanied by fresh crusty bread. Check out the ingredients list below for our version of this New England classic of American chop suey.
