The Story of Gustinella Wines in Sicily

For Sonia Gambino from Gustinella Wine, the story of her winery is one of making lemonade out of lemons – or rather, phenomenal wine out of serendipitous grapes. Sonia ended up in Maletto, Sicily during Covid and through a wild turn of events, began making wine using Maletto grapes– an uncommon choice in Sicily. Most grapes don’t ripen at the high elevation of Maletto, but Sonia discovered that Maletto grapes make great Grenache (for red wine) and Grecanico Dorato (white wine). These grapes, fertilized naturally by the volcanic soil of Mount Etna in the hot southern Italian weather, create beautifully light and delicate wines. Though delicate, they are still rich in flavor.
